In May, 2020, my article Lights! Camera! Action! won 1st place in the feature article category at the American Horse Publications Convention Annual Awards.The awards were actually a virtual presentation given the COVID-19 pandemic situation. The feature is about the role of horses in the movie industry and it was published in the Canadian Horse Journal Annual Guide 2019.
In addition, my article Safer Landings: How to Minimize Risk from Injury from Falls won 1st place in the Service to the Horse Industry category at the same Convention. The article looks at how to fall safely and those who train riders in the event of mishaps. It was published by Canadian Horse Journal in their Autumn 2019 issue.
In June 2019, my article Senior Senator's Triumph
published in Canadian Horse Journal won in the feature article category at the American Horse Publications Convention Annual Awards. The article tells the story of Senior Senator, a 7-year-old Thoroughbred that had won the challenging Maryland Hunt Cup steeplechase race in 2016. Defending his title in 2017, he fell at the third fence and fractured a vertebrae in his neck. He underwent successful surgery at the New Bolton Center at the University of Pennsylvania, recovered, and in 2018 once more won the Maryland Hunt Cup.
My article Horse Industry Builders placed second and my feature #Me Too in the Horse Industry documenting sexual harassment and assault in the industry placed third.
In June 2018, my article
"Ghosts of the Coal Mines" published in Canadian Horse Journal Annual Guide 2017 won 1st place in the feature article category at the American Horse Publications Annual Awards in Maryland. The article explores the life of horses and ponies that once worked in the coal mines, the bonds they struck with miners, the hazards they faced, and the changes that brought about better conditions for them over the years until ponies were no longer used in the coal mining industry.
In 2011, two of my feature stories for Canadian Horse Journal placed in the American Horse Publications Annual Awards Competition. "Wild Horse Management: One Shot At A Time"
profiling the techniques of immunocontraception to control wild horse populations placed 2nd in the Editorial category. "Appeal for Equine Flood Victims in Pakistan"
profiling the humane crisis during the record-setting 2010 floods placed 3rd in the News Reporting: Related Feature Story category.
